পাহাড়ে জুম চাষীরা উৎসবমুখর পরিবেশে ধান কাটা শুরু করেছে । তাই পাহাড়ে পাহাড়িদের একমাত্র ভরসা হলো জুম চাষ। জুম চাষ তাদের একটি আদি প্রথা।এটি তাদের ঐতিহ্য।পাহাড়ে ডালে যুগ যুগ ধরে পাহাড়িরা বসবাস করে পিরামিড পদ্ধতিতে জুম চাষ করে জীবিকা নির্বাহ করে আসছে। সেটা এখনো ধরে রেখেছেন জুমিয়ারা।
চাষিরা মাঘ-ফাল্গুল মাসে জঙ্গল কাটে,সে জঙ্গল চৈত্র মাসে শুরু থেকে আগুনে পুড়ে আগাছা পরিষ্কার করার পর বৈশাখে সাধারণ ধানের পাশাপাশি বিভিন্ন জাতের সুগন্ধি যুক্ত ধান সহ নানা শাক- সবজি, ফলমূল ও মসল্লা জাতীয় শস্য বা ফসলের বীজ বপন বা রোপন করে থাকেন।
এ জুম ধান ভাদ্র-আশ্বিন মাসে পাকা শুরু হয়। প্রতি বছরের ন্যায় এবারেও জুমে পাকা ধান বা ফসল তোলার মৌসুম।
রাঙ্গামাটি বিলাইছড়ির মৌন এলাকায় বসবাস করা স্থানীয় জুমচাষীদের সঙ্গে কথা বলে জানা গেছে,এবছর তাদের জুমে বেশ ভালো ফলন হয়েছে।
নতুন জুম কাটায় ঘরে ঘরে প্রতিটি মুহূর্ত আনন্দে কাটছে।প্রায় প্রতিদিনই আপ্যায়ন থাকে যা নবান্ন (নয়া ভাত) এর আয়োজন দেখা গেছে।ধান ছাড়াও মারফা,শশা, চিনাল, বেগুন, তুলা,করলা, ঢেড়স, কুমড়া,ধনিয়া,আদা, হলুদ, শুকুর, মিষ্টিকুমড়া, ভুট্টা, লাউ, শিম, কাউন,তিল,মরিচ কচু, জুমের আলু,কলা ও জুমের বিভিন্ন ধরনের শাক-সব্জিও ফলমূল উৎপাদন হচ্ছে।
রাঙ্গামাটি কৃষিসম্প্রসার অধিদপ্তরের সংশ্লিষ্ট কতৃপক্ষ থেকে জানা গেছে,জুমে উৎপাদিত আদা,হলুদ দেশের চাহিদা মিটিয়ে বিদেশেও রপ্তানি করা হচ্ছে।এবং জুম চাষীদের জন্য প্রতিবার বিশেষ প্রশিক্ষণের ব্যবস্থা করা হয়ে থাকে।
